Meet Keith

Keith is a 50 year old gentleman, who stayed with his parents until his mother died. His father was unable to look after him so Keith went to live permanently in a hospital. He stayed in institutional care for many years until 2005 when he moved into his own home for the first time in his life.

Keith now receives 24 hour support from Cornerstone staff in his own home as he has a learning disability, type 2 diabetes and suffers from a psychotic disorder. He needs a high level of emotional support from the Cornerstone team who support him however he maintains contact with his sisters who stay locally and has a network of friends whom he enjoys spending time with.

Since coming out of institutional care Keith has been supported to develop skills that have enabled him to take on the responsibilities of running his own home. Keith prepares his own meals with the minimum of assistance from staff. He is able to carry out all household chores and enjoys the independence of going to the local shop on his own.  Keith is able to be left unsupported in his home for 2hrs in the morning three days a week. With support he attends college two days a week.

Keith has identified and already achieved the following goals

  • landscaping his garden
  • going on holiday to London
  • decorating his bathroom and
  • putting laminated flooring down in his living room.

His new goals are

  • to work towards having more independent time without support from staff
  • to take up voluntary work
  • to arrange a holiday for his next birthday and
  • to be supported to make a will.
