Meet Jamie

Jamie is a 28 year old man who currently lives at home with his mother.  He received a brain injury (as well as some serious physical injuries) just before his 21st birthday as a result of a serious assault in his local community.  He is now deaf in one ear, and partially blind in one eye.

Before his injury Jamie was in permanent employment and enjoyed a full social life. The assault devastated his life in so many ways.  Now he often becomes frustrated when trying to communicate, and he will occasionally do this in an inappropriate manner.  He can also present challenging behaviour due to the nature of his brain injury.

Jamie is currently supported by Cornerstone to access a wide range of community activities which include seasonal voluntary work at the community farm, attending a college computing course, swimming, going to the cinema and eating out.

Jamie’s Mum has told us that he is much happier and that her relationship with him has improved greatly.  Both of them really value the support they get from Cornerstone and the respite it provides.

Jamie has now accepted a single tenancy, and with a combination of Day Opportunities and Community Support from Cornerstone, hopes to live independently.  He has always said that he would like to get a job again and so he now meets regularly with the staff in Cornerstone’s Employment Service to move towards this.  With continued Cornerstone support he will go on to live independently in his own community and his future looks bright again.
