Fraser is an 11 year old young man with Aspergers and Hydrocephalous. Due to challenging behaviour he was excluded from school and family life was very chaotic. His mother felt unable to take him out of the house due to his behaviour so his entire day was spent playing computer games inside. Fraser has a brother who is profoundly deaf and his mum was finding it difficult to cope.
Fraser’s Cornerstone Support Worker has helped him to go out to the park and more recently to the library in preparation for a return to mainstream schooling, helping Fraser understand and follow rules and learn when it is appropriate to be quiet. Fraser has also been able to visit places of interest such as a Transport Museum and then activities, such as having lunch at McDonalds.
As a result of Cornerstone supporting the family Fraser’s mum was able to go out and have some “me time” on her own. Fraser’s Support Worker introduced a calming activity and consistent support from staff meant that his behaviour improved greatly. He settled back into doing school work and accepted the boundaries that have been set by his Cornerstone staff.
A school placement was found and Fraser and his family are thrilled that with Cornerstone’s help they had achieved the aim of him being able to return to school.
