Billy is a 64 year old man. When he was 3 he contracted meningitis, which left him unable to speak or hear and he developed a learning disability. Eventually his parents were unable to cope and Billy received long term hospital care.
When he left the hospital he was moved to a hostel and thereafter to his present home in the community where Cornerstone provides him with 24 hour a day care.
Billy is now fully involved in day to day life; cleaning, shopping, laundry and cooking. Billy is also supported by Cornerstone staff to maintain his large garden.
Billy is a friendly and sociable character, having a wide circle of friends. He now has a Motability car, and with Cornerstone staff support he is able to venture further afield on days out. Billy attends a local walking group and likes being out in all weathers. He goes to discos which are organised by Cornerstone, goes bowling, visits the local pub and cinema and the Deaf Society where he enjoys meeting up with his friends.
Billy regularly went out for coffee with his Aunt until she died last year. Billy now has no immediate family living in the area however once a year, supported by Cornerstone staff, Billy travels by plane or train to stay with his brother in England.
Billy has leukaemia, but his health is good and is currently not restricting any plans for the future. He does however faces benefit changes as he receives high level Disability Living Allowance which will stop in 2012 and this will affect his access to his Motability vehicle. Cornerstone will support him to apply for relevant benefits and we will ensure his life is as full and satisfying as it is today!
